Alistair transported me to the bar seconds later, wrapping me in night and stars. I clung to him, the scent of blooming jasmine and musk filling my nose.

When we arrived, he set me down gently and took a step back. “I think you can fly.”

My attention snapped to him. “What?”

He chuckled. “Not with potions or magic. I think you have an inherent ability, given by either your father or the foreign magic lurking inside you.”

I blinked and stared down at myself. “Foreign magic?”

He held up his hands. “I misspoke. Not foreign. Not anymore. But magic not of your mother or your father.”

Lilith came up to us, her eyes holding Alistair’s. Realization flashed inside them. “I will let you two catch up. Excuse me.” The dragon brushed past us and headed up the stairs, my confused look following him the entire way.

When I turned to my mother, she masked her expression, but not before I could have sworn she suppressed a flash of guilt.

“What does he mean?” I asked.

She took me by the arm and walked me to the bar. “I heard you had an interesting day,” she said, deftly avoiding the question.

“Mom.”

Lilith squeezed my arm gently and settled me into a chair. “Let’s eat first.” There were hollows in her eyes I’d never seen before. Only then did I remember that Lucifer had flown back here. “Mom.”

She held up her hand. “Violet. Please.”

Sighing, I pressed my lips together, staying silent against my better judgment.

Mom went behind the bar and dug in the lower fridge, pulling out a massive board. She snagged a bottle of good wine from the rack above and brought both over to the table, then went back for plates, glasses, and a wine opener.

When she settled back in, she said nothing for a long while, only filling my plate with meats, nuts, and cheeses, and pouring us both a hefty glass of wine. The bar was empty, completely silent. Clara and Dave were either upstairs or otherwise occupied, and I hadn’t seen Keelie in days.

When she finished, she crossed her hands in front of her. “Violet.”

I sipped my wine and watched her.

“Lucifer came to me.”

“I’m sorry,” I blurted.

Her eyes softened. “I know you are, darling. I’m not angry.”

“You aren’t?”

A laugh bubbled from her. “How could I be? I did it to save you both. Lucifer and Michael tangling would have been catastrophic, and the second I knew I was pregnant with you, I would have given Michael everything I was to save you.”

Hot tears filled my eyes. “Mom?”

“Yes, darling?”

“You love him, don’t you?”

We both knew I wasn’t talking about Michael.

“Oh, honey. I never stopped.”

Those tears spilled. “Why can’t you—why do you have to be apart?” Despite my oddly conflicted feelings about Lucifer, I finally realized I wasn’t attracted to him in that way, but there was something there.

Mom’s smile was sad. “Sometimes you can love someone with every depth of your being, and it still isn’t right. We aren’t human. We didn’t live among humans for long. People like us experience love differently.
